100% Design (23-26 September 2015), the UK’s largest design trade show, will move to its new home Olympia London this September, celebrating its 21st edition. Saturday 26 September will be the consumer day, which allows the general public into the exhibition floor for its final day. Visitors to the show can check out an array of product launches and activities – from the Interiors section of the show featuring a specially commissioned installation by Studio Design UK, to a bespoke 100% Design sound piece by Robin the Fog, a book sale with Black Dog Publishing, live colour tool demonstrations from Cube by Palette and a consumer focused talks programme as part of Talks with 100% Design.
The Interiors section of 100% Design is the perfect place to get some inspiration for the home. Andy Thornton will be celebrating 40 years in the business and launching new lighting ranges, Havana glass pendants and Portland concrete pendants. JamJar Lights will exhibit a pick and mix selection of lighting accessories including galvanized sockets, rusty conduit and LED filament bulbs.
Joined + Jointed, a collective of celebrated designers brought together by a shared love of contemporary design, will show their collection of simple and beautiful pieces at the show. Design brand Mags Design will be in the Argentinian international pavilion showcasing its innovative lighting collections. Another pavilion, Spirit Slovenija is bringing together a collection of pieces ranging from innovative chairs, to contemporary furniture, smart appliances, homeware and gadgets for smartphones.
Launching exclusively at 100% Design is Cube by Palette. Palette is a young collective of designers and engineers who believe people become artists when given the right tools. Palette’s first product is Cube, the portable colour digitiser. Cube fits in your hand and with one-tap captures the colour of any surface. Cube seamlessly pairs with smartphones and desktops to show raw colour values in RGB, CMYK, HEX, LAB and LRV. Palette will be doing live demonstrations on its stand at 100% Design.
The Interiors Feature
The overall show theme, Design in Colour, resonates strongly in the Interiors section of 100% Design. Within this section, the specially commissioned feature highlights the Spring/Summer 2016 colours identified by trend forecasters WGSN. By applying the key colours to a concept space dominated by a series of columns, the carefully selected pieces of furniture bring to life the look and feel of latest and future interiors.
Created by Studio Design UK, the striking feature provides a simple concept of colour matching both products and tones. It celebrates the unexpected in design, inviting people to look differently at the traditional room set. Working with a range of partners including Paint by Conran, Artemide, Vitra, Arper, Lasvit and Terence Woodgate, the feature creates a series of spaces that visitors can enter from different locations and discover a different experience each time.
Talks with 100% Design – Saturday 26 September
11.00am – Lyndon Neri
Co-founder of Chinese studio Neri and Hu, Wallpaper’s Designer of the Year in 2014, headline speaker Lyndon Neri will talk about his work, its relationship to colour and why some of the most interesting design right now is taking place in the East. Chaired by Suzanne Trocmé, editor-at-large for Wallpaper*.
12.15pm – How to be more colour confident with your home design
Join Karen Haller, leading authority in applied colour psychology, to find out how colour can become more than just mere decoration and instead be used to create a home that positively affects your behavior and overall wellbeing.
13.45pm – Shops are embracing multisensory design, but what does that mean for the customer?
You might not know it but clever tricks are being played on you every time you enter a shop. Neuromarketeers have devised schemes to capture your attention; designers have created spaces that engage you in ways you’re not even aware of. Jon Ward from Acuity Intelligence, an expert on eye tracking, will present an interactive talk with live demonstrations to show key principles. Joining him is Sarah Housley from WGSN talking about the rising trend of experience design.
15.00pm – Fed up of beige? How to do bold, original colour.
Need help to create a colour palette, and make the leap from being inspired by the pages of a magazine to having the confidence to create your own colour schemes? Our speakers Sophie Robinson, stylist and expert on BBC2’s Great Interior Design Challenge, and Naomi Cleaver, interior designer and TV presenter, show how to create colour palettes, with tips for mood boards and sourcing inspiration, as well as practical advice. Chaired by Susie Rumbold, president-elect of the BIID.
16.30pm – Does the colour of a restaurant affect how our food tastes?
Leading experimental psychologist Charles Spence explores how different colours affect the way our food tastes and what this means for restaurant design. He is joined by Afroditi Krassa, designer of many restaurants including one for Heston Blumenthal, and chef Jozef Youssef, a rising new talent in molecular gastronomy. Chaired by Johanna Agerman Ross, editor-in-chief at Disegno.
For the consumer day, 100% Design has teamed up with website Houzz to programme an exciting day of talks aimed at the homeowner and professional. Houzz is the world’s leading platform for home renovation and design, bringing homeowners and home professionals together in a uniquely visual community. 12.00pm – What is Houzz and how can it help you?
Make the most of what Houzz has to offer, including how to find inspiration by browsing more than 7 million images, see work from more than 800,000 professionals, have design dilemmas answered by its vibrant community, find products and read practical guides and how-to features written by industry professionals.
13.30pm – The anatomy of a house: the UK renovation market
Based on in-depth, in-house surveys, Andrew Small, managing director of Houzz UK and Ireland, will highlight how UK homeowners are renovating and decorating their homes. The talk will cover living room, kitchen and bedroom trends, as well as renovation projects that are particularly popular in the UK, and will reveal what triggers homeowners to renovate and update their homes.
14.45pm – A global perspective: home improvement inspiration from around the world
Andrew Small, managing director of Houzz UK and Ireland, will talk renovating and decorating trends in the UK and compare them with what’s happening globally, across the US, Europe, and Australia and ask whether there is such a thing as a quintessentially British project. Insights are based on the annual Houzz & Home 2015 survey, which surveyed more than 260,000 respondents worldwide, representing the activity of the more than 30 million monthly unique users on Houzz.
16.15pm – How to work with an interior designer in the 21st Century
What should you expect when working with an interior designer? Ffion Francis from Houzz chairs a panel that explores budgets, processes and idea-sharing, as well as how interior design has changed in the digital era. Explore tools and features that will make working together more efficient and fun. Speakers include Kia Stanford from Kia Designs, Anna Auzins from Anna Auzins Interiors and Egon Walesch from Egon Walesch Interiors & Flowers.
Other highlights at 100% Design
Launched at Clerkenwell Design Week this May, the Havwoods routemaster bus will be located outside 100% Design’s main entrance. Hop on board and discover the vast selection of wooden surfaces from the UK’s leading flooring experts.
Sound artist and radio producer Robin the Fog has produced an exclusive sonic portrait of Olympia itself, recording and looping the sounds of everyday cleaning and maintenance on a trio of vintage reel-to-reel tape machines, while using the building’s distinctive cavernous halls as a giant echo chamber.
Black Dog Publishing specialises in beautifully produced illustrated books that represent a fresh, eclectic take on contemporary culture. Starting from a base in art and architecture, the company has grown to embrace subjects as varied as design, fashion, music and environmental concerns.
