Ticketless tube stations could be the future

Gateless Gateline Station Visualisation

London design practice Maynard has developed a prototype for a facial recognition ticket system that could double the speed of passengers moving through London’s busy train and tube stations. ‘Gateless Gateline’ has been produced for Cubic Transportation Systems with specialists, including Bristol Robotics Laboratory, in response to a consultation on how to relieve queue times at station entrances in the face of population growth in the capital. The system combines technologies including biometrics, video analytics and big data to allow pre-registered and paid-up passengers to walk straight through fare lines without presenting a ticket. It is currently being developed at the Cubic Innovation Centre in Farringdon, ready for a potential operator to roll out the concept.
