As part of the Ambrose collection introduced by Heal’s, A-Frame is a freestanding furniture range created exclusively by British designer Matthew Elton. Hand made in East London by Elton, A-Frame requires no fixings for easy assembly and dismantling, in line with Ambrose’s founding ethos, small spaces, smart living. The range also allows the user to select components based on the configuration they require, whether it be a tiered shelving unit, a desk or a hanging rail.

Design directed by Sir Kenneth Grange, Ambrose is synonymous with design, quality and urban living. The collection draws on Heal’s rich heritage and expertise in furniture making, whilst presenting innovative solutions for the way we live now.

The A-Frame range comprises a shelving unit (£795), hanging rail (£595), desk (£795), dining table (£795), bench (£495) and a coffee table (£395). Requiring no glue or screws, A-Frame boasts a unique design that relies only on the angles of the legs and shelves to hold the piece firmly together. With a two-part frame, the system is angled at 6 degrees in all directions to support the individual components as they slot together.

Made using traditional techniques, the shelves feature precision made slots, allowing them to wedge gently into position to stabilise the piece. To maintain a consistent colour, each finished piece – which comes flat packed – has been machined from a single piece of white American oak with a clear matt lacquer.

Matthew Elton comments, “I was interested in making a collection that could be assembled dry without glue, relying on the carefully crafted design, influenced by classic joinery techniques.

“With the A-Frame, I wanted to play with scale and conventional expectations in order to create the feeling of space. I chose American oak because it’s a timber that can be refined down to minimalist proportions, but still remains very strong.”

Elton adds, “The angles and presence of the A-Frame give it a sense of elegance, and it feels calm, relaxed and perfectly balanced.”
