London-based practice Tate Harmer has won a competition to design a bold new creative centre at York St John University. The proposed design incorporates a 200-seat auditorium alongside flexible teaching spaces for use by students on art, design and media-production courses. The building will act as a beacon on the university’s campus, with the auditorium facing towards the historic York Minster cathedral. A collaborative atrium space will link the teaching spaces and auditorium, creating a communal area which will act as a ‘mixing valve’ between creative disciplines.
