Circular principles for architecture and design

At Caro Communications, our appetite for design excellence and cultural contribution is embedded in the industry’s capacity for doing and making good, both socially and sustainably – we love supporting our clients to pursue methods and practices that promote a circular economy.

Embodying the principles of circular manufacturing, bathroom design brand VitrA is pioneering an innovative approach in which materials that would otherwise be discarded during the manufacturing process are reclaimed. On a visit to the VitrA Innovation Centre near Istanbul we had the opportunity to see the research that has gone in to the making of the sustainable, high quality and beautifully designed Recycled Ceramic Washbasin. The ingenuity of the design was recognised recently as Product of the Year at the Mix Awards.

Meanwhile, our year with Holcim a global leader in sustainable building materials and winner of Fast Company‘s World Changing Ideas competition, started with a visit to their Innovation Hub near Lyon.

There we encountered a new 3D printed bridge, Phoenix, which incorporates recycled material from the original Striatus bridge, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

Closer to home, Holcim is supplying low-carbon concrete containing 20% of construction demolition material for Wood Wharf, a new mixed-use quarter in Canary Wharf. The demolition material comes from a redundant marine deck nearby, demonstrating circular principles in action.
