3XN’s Sydney Fish Market approaches completion

Set to open in January 2025, the new Sydney Fish Market, located on Sydney Harbour, was designed by 3XN/GXN Architects in association with BVN and Aspect Studios.

At the heart of the design is a major rethink of the market archetype: open-air, human-scaled, and socially dynamic. A key challenge of the brief was to enable the seamless daily operation of a working fish market and daily auction with public visitor access.

The Caro office in Sydney is supporting 3XN on a range of public relations activity in Australia and globally. During a recent press tour, we explored new public spaces within the market, and around it, including a park-like plaza filled with native-planting, public seating, and views across the bay.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the building is a world-class example of cutting-edge engineering: harnessing sunlight to illuminate upper levels, collecting rainwater for recycling, and generating solar energy to power its operations.

The 200m wave-like roof is the buildings most iconic feature and an engineering marvel: weighing a staggering 2,500 tonnes it is comprised of 407 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams.

Located on Sydney Harbour, the Fish Market joins a string of the city’s iconic harbour sites through an extended foreshore promenade. The new Sydney Fish Market is being built by Infrastructure NSW and construction partner Multiplex. Visit the 3XN website and follow 3XN for updates
